This is U Street. The seat of DC urban living. Clubs, theatres and restaurants of every flavor fill the area. A short walk takes you to the city’s other great neighborhoods of 14th Street, Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle. The Metro takes you even further. But this is where urban life begins. Here along U, where music flows through open windows and life can be lived with your own vibe.

The Stores
Along U, up 18th, down 14th, over to Connecticut, from here you are only a walk from DC’s best boutique stores. From sleek modern furnishings to vintage clothing to African art to Americana antiques, a day is quickly whiled away strolling from shop to shop.

The Restaurants
The tastes of the world converge around U. Thai, Indian, French, Ethiopian, Japanese, Italian, Mexican, American bistro and American traditional. Fast food and five course. Any cuisine you want is here. Jazz it up with the Cajun-inspired flavors of Utopia. Lean back with the comfort food of Polly’s Café. Gather with friends for the hip Tex-Mex of Lauriol Plaza. Stop time and savor the delectable sweets of Cakelove. Whatever your tastes, the flavors are on U Street.

The Nightlife
From the rhythms of Bohemian Caverns to the headliners at 9:30 Club, from the historic comfort food of Ben’s Chili Bowl to the haute cuisine of Local 16, U Street is where the night happens. Dress up or dress down, kick back or kick it up, the night is at your doorstep.

The Culture
Only a few doors down from The Ellington is the historic Lincoln Theatre, the centerpiece of U Street’s art movement but only the beginning of what the area offers. From the galleries of Dupont Circle to The Studio Theatre just down 14th to the ultimate movie art house, Visions Cinema, just blocks away, DC’s artists are at home here.

The History
As one of the most historically rich neighborhoods in Washington, U Street has long influenced the course of not only the city but the nation as well.

All along 14th Street during the first half of the 20th century, shops, restaurants, and car showrooms attracted lively crowds from everywhere in the city. Three first-run movie theatres and an array of nightclubs lit up the neighborhood.

The greatest names in entertainment played the theatres, clubs and after-hours hideaways of U Street, known as Black Broadway for its ability to attract the greatest entertainers of the day. Sarah Vaughn, Pearl Bailey, Cab Calloway, Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Jelly Role Morton and Louis Armstrong were just a few of the famous names who performed at the Club Bali at 14th and T, the Howard Theatre at 7th and T, the Lincoln Colonnade and the Crystal Caverns on U Street.

While the neighborhood has undergone many changes over the decades, the artistic and intellectual spirit remains. Jazz still plays in many clubs, but so too can you hear the beats of rhythm and blues, hip hop, salsa, techno and pop.

To experience something of this vibrant history today, you can take in a show at the Lincoln Theatre, restored to the gilded glory that inspired Jean Toomer to feature it in his celebrated Harlem renaissance novel, Cane. Take the self-guided walking tour, City Within a City, which explores the rich cultural legacy of the neighborhood. Visit the newly renovated Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage, once the home of the 12th Street YMCA, where the restored first floor and fascinating exhibits bring back the days when the budding poet Langston Hughes stayed here and was first encouraged in his talents.

Now a vibrant multi-cultural hub, U Street continues to play a vital role in DC life. With the rich textures of the past providing the context on which the present rises, U Street remains an incredible neighborhood and a great place to live.
